Programs

"I participated a lot and spoke from my heart, and now I use the mentoring skills with my brother and sister. I really want to somehow stay involved with the program in the future."

Peer Mentoring

Peer Mentors Make a Difference.

Peer mentors are trained young people who help other students develop decision-making skills, establish and keep personal goals, stay in school, and plan for college and careers. Mentoring uses the power of one-to-one, peer-to-peer interactions to convey important messages and assist students in becoming well adjusted, self-directed individuals.

Under strict confidentiality, mentors teach mentees academic skills and advise on how to make healthy decisions so they can succeed in school and in life. These relationships often help struggling students become more engaged in their classes, and many mentees go on to become future peer mentors and leaders for other students.

Program Accomplishments

Last year a total of 202 peer mentors served 337 students in over 2,500 mentoring sessions. In most cases an older mentor paired with a younger student; some high schools reported targeting incoming freshmen in order to assist in the transition to high school.
