Peer Educators Make a Difference.
Peer Education enables students to develop classroom and school assembly presentations that address many of the issues and problems facing the youth of today. All peer education presentations are based on students modeling positive youth behavior and sharing important facts with their peers in a fun and interactive way. Presentations incorporate multiple learning styles such as role-play, game show skits, and rap songs, all designed to inform, educate, and inspire students to make positive life choices and protect them from engaging in high risk behavior. Some issues addressed in peer education presentations include violence prevention, sexual harassment, drug and alcohol use, and depression.
Program Accomplishments
During the 2004-2005 school year 668 students participated as peer educators, and approximately 13,000 students benefited from peer educator led assemblies. Last fall, peer educators at Galileo High School educated their entire freshman class on sexual harassment during orientation, reaching a total of 700 students. In addition, Galileo peer educators traveled to Marina Middle School and educated the entire after school program about sexual harassment.
