Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutors Make a Difference:

Peer tutoring teams provide academic help in subjects ranging from mathematics and chemistry to English as a second language. Tutoring takes place in classrooms during the lunch hour or after school. Students receiving tutoring are either referred by teachers, recruited by their peers, or voluntarily drop in on a tutoring session. Tutors are trained in teaching skills and are matched with individual students for one-on-one sessions.

Program Accomplishments:

Last year Peer Leaders provided 203 mentoirng opportunities that served 680 students across all 22 Peer Resources Schools. At some sites, peer tutors have helped in special education classes with severely disabled students. In many cases, students trained as peer tutors combined specific tutoring skills with skills taught through the Strategies of Successful Students curriculum or they completed tutoring activities during mentoring sessions.
