Golden Apple Fellowship

(this program is currently suspended)

The Golden Apple Fellowship gives outstanding educators the opportunity to improve their teaching skills by taking a semester off from their regular teaching duties to pursue coursework at UC Berkeley. The Golden Apple Fellowship program is designed to recognize excellent public school teachers by awarding them with an opportunity to renew their commitment to the profession as well as their own learning and to build the capital of educators within the field and the broader community.

Golden Apple Fellowship program awards one teacher with a semester of paid study at UC Berkeley. Through our partnership with UC Berkeley and SFUSD, Fellows are able to enroll full-time at UC Berkeley while continuing to receive full salary and benefits from the district. Under the guidance of UC Berkeley faculty advisors, the fellowship provides teachers with time to sharpen their subject matter expertise, broaden their knowledge base, and reflect on ways to teach more effectively.

After the fellowship, teachers are expected to develop a classroom activity based on a specific aspect of their coursework; these projects create a link between the fellowship experience and the public school classroom. This project will be implemented upon the Fellows' return to the classroom in the semester following the fellowship study, supplemented by a grant from the Ed Fund. Fellows are also required to make a commitment to remain in the San Francisco Unified School District for an additional two years.
