Each year, the Josephine Miles Fellowship Program awards up to 30 SFUSD teachers and other certificated employees one free class at UC Berkeley or UC Extension for their own professional development. In addition to one fee-free course at UC Berkeley or UC Extension, Fellows also receive: credit for coursework through UC Extension; an award of $500 to cover the costs of materials and expenses associated with taking a course; and access to campus library facilities.

Individual teachers may apply to enroll in a course that furthers their professional development goals. In addition, groups of two to four teachers may apply to receive the Fellowship as a team. Fellowship Teams must identify a topic that would further their school-site goals. Each member of the Fellowship Team then takes a different (but complementary) course. Members of the team will work to support the integration of information learned in Fellowship courses into their teaching practice. Team members do not have to be from the same school, but they must be working to further similar professional development goals. Best of all, you only need to submit one Applicant Essay for the entire team!

Josephine Miles Fellows agree to:

• Complete one course at UC Berkeley or UC Extension in the following year (including summer);
• Participate in program evaluations and documentation, including presentations to colleagues about the experience;
• Refrain from taking travel-study courses, or online courses (enrollment in other high-cost classes will be considered on a case-by-case basis);
• Provide the Ed Fund with program development advice and representation in public forums.
