Guidelines, Applications, and Deadlines

Overview

The LPD Grants Program invites teachers and other certificated personnel (such as counselors, librarians, etc.) to structure their work in ways that foster and enhance schools as high quality learning communities, resulting in excellent and equitable outcomes for all students. Through promoting the key elements of innovation, teacher collaboration and learning, equity, building and sustaining strong school-community relationships, and positive sustainable change in schools, the LPD Grants program offers a framework as well as financial and technical support to build successful teaching and learning environments.

Grant application deadlines for the 2008-2009 academic year has been extended again to April 3, 2008.

Four categories of grants are available to SFUSD teachers, counselors, librarians, and other certified personnel:

Community Partners Grants – $6,000-$9,000

Teacher Learning Grants – $6,000-$9,000

Classroom Project Grants – up to $1,500

Sustainability Grants – up to $1,500

 

Classroom Project Grants

Description

Classroom Project Grants are for teams of 2 or more teachers to support innovative projects that inspire and engage both students and teachers to improve student outcomes in a particular academic area.

Funding Level

Up to $1,500

Grant monies can be used for, but aren’t limited to:

  • Professional fees or stipends
  • Expenses for attendance at professional development workshop or conference
  • Teacher stipends or substitutes for teacher learning and/or collaboration
  • Materials required to implement student activities

Criteria

Grant proposals must contain the following components:

  • Active student learning and participation that results in excellent and equitable student achievement outcomes
  • Collaborative planning and teaching
  • An expected change in teacher knowledge and capacity in project area
  • Focus on meeting needs of and improving outcomes for underserved student population(s)
  • Available for teachers who have not participated in an Ed Fund grant and/or teachers with new grant ideas
  • Potential for expansion and sustainability

Expected Outcomes

  • New curriculum developed
  • New instructional strategies put into practice
  • A measurable improvement in student achievement and/or behavior

Applications are due April 3, 2008 and are evaluated by Ed Fund Staff.

Teacher Learning Grants

Description

 

Teacher Learning Grants are for teams of 5 or more teachers and provide for ongoing site-based professional learning communities (PLC) aimed at changing student outcomes by way of enhancing teacher learning. These networks are opportunities for teachers to share their best practices, look at student work, gain support, build community, and reflect on their work. Teachers may create new or use existing models of this form of professional development.

Funding Level

$6,000-$9,000

Grant monies can be used for, but are not limited to:

  • Professional fees or stipends for consultant or facilitator
  • Expenses for attendance at professional development workshop or conference
  • Teacher stipends or substitutes for teacher learning and/or collaboration

Criteria

Grant proposals must contain the following components:

  • Ongoing professional development meetings
  • Clearly defined teacher collaboration
  • Active student learning and participation that results in excellent and equitable outcomes
  • An expected change in teacher knowledge and capacity in project area
  • Integration of best practices acquired in PLC into curriculum and linkage to specific academic outcomes
  • Focus on meeting needs of and improving outcomes for traditionally underserved student population(s)
  • Alignment with school-wide goals
  • Department, grade, or school-wide impact
  • Outlined plan for sustainability
  • Written endorsement from school administration

Expected Outcomes

  • New (to the school) instructional strategies put into practice
  • Improvement in teacher communication and collaboration
  • Measurable and equitable gains in student achievement and/or student behavior

Community Partner Grants

Description

Community Partner Grants are for teams of 5 or more teachers who initiate and implement a large-scale project in conjunction with a community-based organization, a small local business, or a team of parents or community members. The project must give students access to places, people, ideas, or opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise have, and support student learning objectives. The project is integrated into academic subjects through teacher learning, collaboration, and capacity building (i.e. teachers learn how to bring community resources to the school).

Funding Level

$6,000-$9,000

Grant monies can be used for, but are not limited to:

  • Professional fees or stipends for community partner
  • Community resource specialist training stipend
  • Teacher stipends or substitutes for capacity building activities
  • Teacher stipends or substitutes for teacher learning and/or collaboration
  • Materials required to implement activities
  • Transportation for field trips

Criteria

Grant proposals must contain the following components:

  • Active student learning and participation that results in excellent and equitable outcomes
  • Committed community partnership
  • A plan for teacher capacity building for sustained involvement from proposed partner or new partners
  • Collaborative planning and teaching
  • An expected change in teacher knowledge and capacity in project area
  • Integration of best practices acquired in PLC into curriculum and linkage to specific academic outcomes
  • Focus on meeting needs of and improving outcomes for underserved student population(s)
  • Alignment with school-wide goals
  • Has department, grade, or school-wide impact
  • Outlined plan for sustainability
  • Written endorsement from school administration

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved teacher capacity to access and sustain community partnerships
  • A positive change in teacher practice based on knowledge gained through partnership
  • A positive change in student learning and/or behavior

Sustainability Grants

Description

To support the ongoing implementation of successful grant projects that are aligned with the Ed Fund vision, Sustainability Grants are for existing grant teams who want continued support from the Ed Fund to sustain their project activities. Eligible applicants include previous LPD Grant recipients from the 2006-2007 or 2007-2008 grant cycle, or current Sustainability Grant recipients. Sustainability Grants can be awarded up to 2 times after the original LPD Grant project has been completed. Classroom Project Grants may not apply for a Sustainability Grant.

Funding Level

$500-$1,500

2007-2008 LPD Grant recipients can apply for a second year of sustainability funding under the following guidelines: General Grant ($2,000) recipients can apply for up to $500, Team Grants ($5,000) can apply for up to $1,200, and Expanded Team Grants ($7,000) can apply for up to $1,500.

2007-2008 Community Partner or Teacher Learning Grant recipients can apply for up to $1500.

  • Teacher stipends or substitutes for teacher learning and/or collaboration
  • Materials required to implement activities

Grant proposals must support the continued work of recently or currently funded grants at the Ed Fund.

Expected Outcomes

  • A continued improvement in student learning and/or behavior
  • A positive change in teacher practice
