Apply to Mentor: Steps
The process to become a mentor is different if you are already a registered volunteer with us. Please answer the following question to help us determine how you apply:
I am already a registered volunteer.
Since you have already gone through the basic process to volunteer there are fewer steps for you to become a mentor:
1. Attend a mentor-specific orientation. This training is to prepare you for your role as a mentor.
The next new mentor training is on Saturday, February 20, 1:00 – 4:00 pm at our offices (727 Golden Gate Avenue).
2. Get fingerprinted. Due to a change in policy at SFUSD all volunteers now need to be fingerprinted. If you cleared as a volunteer before fingerprints were mandatory you need to have a livescan done. If you already had them done as a part of your volunteer clearance with us you do not need to do them again.
We will scan your fingerprint from noon – 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 20 before the mentor training begins.
Fingerprinting costs us $66 per person. We are asking each volunteer for a one-time suggested contribution of $66 to cover that cost. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. We will collect the fee at the training. We will accept payment via cash, check credit card or money order. Payments are tax deductible.
I am a new volunteer.
Adult Volunteers
1. Attend a new volunteer orientation.
The next new mentor training is on Saturday, February 20.
The new volunteer mentor orientation is broken into two parts:
- 10:00 am – noon: general volunteer orientation. All volunteers regardless of type (mentor, classroom tutor, interpreter etc.) attend this session which covers basic roles of a volunteer and an overview of the Education Fund and San Francisco Unified School District.
- 1:00 – 4:00 pm: mentor specific training. This portion is built for volunteers that will be mentors to prepare you for your specific role.
2. Compile application materials. A completed application packet includes:
- Online application form.
- Proof of a negative TB test result taken after July 1, 2007. Bring your TB test results to orientation. Please note if your test results return positive due to previous immunization we just need a note from your doctor stating that you do not currently have TB.
- Two completed reference forms. References may be personal or professional, but cannot include family members. Bring your completed references to orientation.
- A photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID) – not a photocopy. Bring your ID to orientation.
3. Get fingerprinted.
- We will scan your fingerprints at orientation to do a criminal background check.
