Meet a volunteer: Elvia Diaz
Elvia Diaz has worked as a dedicated leader and beloved parent volunteer at Monroe
Elementary School for six years. Her services and support for school staff
and students are endless: she does everything from administrative tasks
like preparing homework packets to working one-on-one with students in writing
and math.
Outside of the classroom, she jumpstarted the English Learner Advisory Committee, giving the group a strong unified voice that regularly gives input at school site council meetings. Elvia has also played an integral role in motivating other Latino parents to become more involved in school activities and to engage in their student’s education.
According to school staff at Monroe, it is Elvia’s vibrant spirit and unique ability to foster a sense of community among others that really makes her stand out as a school volunteer. School Parent Liaison Violetta Garcia says, “Elvia is an enthusiastic volunteer and keenly sensitive observer. She is attentive and respectful when she listens to the concerns of other people. Her humanism and empathy shine.” Teacher Lisa Greenhill admires Elvia’s “generous spirit” and “big perspective.” “She helps all children; she never just focused on her children that were attending Monroe… She knew that by working with one student in a class, she was helping the whole class stay on task.” Principal Jennifer Steiner says Elvia is so indispensible to the students and teachers at Monroe, “If I could pay her I would!”
