Meet a volunteer: Hoa Tran

Over the last five years, Hoa Tran has become an indispensable part of Newcomer High School, which provides a one-year transitional educational program for newly arrived immigrant and refugee high school–aged students who need to learn English and become familiar with their new social and cultural environment.

Hoa consistently goes above and beyond the school's expectations. He travels 30 miles to volunteer two full days each week without fail, spearheading the school's technology projects and maximizing its resources. From assisting with classroom projects in the computer lab, to creating customized tools for tracking the school's English language development data, to creating a new school website, to training teachers, and more, Hoa is an expert partner in working with Newcomer's students, teachers and staff.

Hoa shared his own immigration and adult-education experience with the students, serving as a role model with whom the students can identify. He will also be volunteer-teaching a computer literacy class to students and parents after school. Hoa has shared a wealth of computer-related knowledge, and most importantly, demonstrated the generosity of the human heart at Newcomer High School.
