“I've been teaching at this school for years. I thought this was an unknown neighborhood – but there are people out there who care… I'm overwhelmed with gratitude at the number of people here today.”

Laura Spiering, teacher at El Dorado Elementary School in Visitacion Valley (at the school's one-day makeover and clean-up)

Be a Career Education VolunteerCareer Education

You can share your career experience with students through two different programs:

Career Speakers Bureau
Career Advisory Board

Career Speakers Bureau

Be a special guest at career days and during career exploration classes. Provide students real life examples of potential professions.

Career Speakers’ role:

  • describe what you do
  • explain which school subjects you use during a day-in-the-life of your profession
  • explain what type of schooling you needed after high school (ex. college, vocation, apprenticeship) to prepare you for your job
  • answer student questions (ex. ballpark salary, what you like most about your job)

When, where and how long are career presentations?

  • When: Career speakers are needed throughout the school year. Teachers submit requests and we compile a calendar of the opportunities. The most popular time of year is February and March. The presentations are made during the school day between 8am-3pm.
  • Where: The presentations happen at high schools and middle schools throughout the city.
  • Time commitment: Opportunities vary but most career presentations are approximately 15-20 minutes long and include a Questions & Answer portion. We ask that career speakers commit to presenting three times in a school year. This can mean presenting multiple times at one career day or on separate days.

Training
We provide an online training to help you prepare a compelling and fun presentation.

Benefits of volunteering

Career Advisory Board

Burton High School is looking for people from Engineering, Finance, Health Sciences and Information Technology fields to volunteer two hours a month on an advisory committee that provides the principal and faculty members with real life examples from your industry to make sure the school’s curriculum and activities stay on the cutting edge of those fields. Advisory committee members will also assist in identifying internship opportunities, provide leads for career speakers and job shadowing.
