Professional Development Framework
In 2008, The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) released its new Strategic Plan “Beyond the Talk” which focuses on equity and social justice, with a strong emphasis on closing the achievement gap. The strategic plan includes a clear commitment to ensuring that teachers, administrators and other district staff receive the professional development (PD) they will need in order to achieve the student success goals set forth in the plan.
Following the successful passage of Proposition A (The San Francisco Teacher Quality and Education Act) which, in part, will provide funding for additional teacher training, the San Francisco Education Fund (Education Fund) approached the new administration with the notion of working with an array of stakeholders to develop a framework for professional development in the SFUSD that would tie closely to the goals and objectives of the strategic plan. District leaders welcomed the opportunity to move forward in the spirit of making the strategic plan a reality.
As a result, the SFUSD and the Education Fund co-hosted a three-day convening in January 2009 that brought together stakeholders from within the district, including administrators, teachers, central office staff, and students, along with community based organizations, education researchers and experts in the field of professional development. Our report provides a glimpse inside the convening and chronicles the processes and outcomes that emerged from this intensive collaborative effort.
